Bogart’s Rule
When a dog bites a man, that is not news because it happens so often. But if a man bites a dog, that is news.
This working definition of news was attributed to John B. Bogart, city editor of the New York Sun, in Frank M. O’Brien’s The Story of the Sun (1918). Bogart’s boss Charles A. Dana also has been credited with it.
