(Mel) Brooks’ Law

Mel Brooks

If you’ve got it flaunt it.

As the great Zero Mostel said in full in The Producers (1968). written and directed by Melvin Kaminsky (a.k.a. Mel Brooks). “That’s it baby if you’ve got it flaunt it.”

This law has a natural corollary, as explained by Noel Perrin, Dartmouth professor and man-about-letters in a book review in the New York Times: “Most self-confident people are competitive even aggressive. ‘If you’ve got it flaunt it’ is their motto. ‘If there’s something you don’t have try to conceal it’ is the corollary” (December 1st 1991).

Mr. Brooks-Kaminsky also deserves to be remembered for the secrets of longevity revealed in his album The 2000-Year-Old Man:

1. Don’t run for a bus - there’ll always be another.
2. Never ever touch fried food.
3. Stay out of a Ferrari or any other small Italian car.
4. Eat fruit - a nectarine - even a rotten plum is good
