If you tell the boss you were late for work because you had a flat tyre, the next morning you will have a flat tyre.
A similar but more serious effect has been noticed by students who explained away a day at the beach or some similar absence by telling the teacher that they had to attend the funeral of a greatly beloved aunt. This is almost guaranteed to bring on the aunt’s death within the week.
