Gove’s Law of Canapés

Michael Gove

Food consumed standing up always has ten times the caalorific intake of food consumed sitting down.

Writing in The Times in 2008 Michael Gove, Conservative MP, advised readers to “Avoid all canapés”, adding “I once worked on a gossip column for two months, attending book launches and the like, and after those eight weeks I looked like a spacehopper balanced on two oil drums.” He reserved his worst criticism for “designer canapés”, describing them as a classic exemplar of “one of the diseases of our time - formidable ingenuity put at the service of the shallowest triviality”.
