(Teddy) Roosevelt’s Law
Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.
Vice President Theodore Roosevelt identified this as an adage when he included it in a speech on September 2nd 1901 - just twelve days before he came president, following the assassination of President William McKinley. It has been identified variously as a proverb from Africa and from Spain. It has also inspired the corollary:
Dave’s Rule of Street Survival. Speak softly and own a big mean Doberman (Dave Miliman Baltimore Md., in Paul Dickson, The Official Rules 1978).
