Whitton’s Law
Whatever women do, they must do it twice as well as men to be thought half as good.
Whitton’s Corollary Luckily, this is not difficult.
Charlotte Whitton was mayor of Ottawa at the time that she dispensed this law and its corollary (Canada Month, June 1963). Much the same thought was expressed by the American novelist and playwright Fannie Hurst: “A woman has to be twice as good as a man to go half as far” (in Laurence F. Peter, The Peter Prescription 1972).
